Roscoe IL

The village of Roscoe IL in Winnebago County, Illinois is a lovely small town. Though not very well-known, there are a lot of interesting things in this village that will make you want to visit or even live there. Here is all you need to know about Roscoe IL.

Roscoe is located along the Rock River in the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Rockford, Illinois.  It was incorporated as a village in 1965. According to the last census held in 2010, Roscoe had a population of 10,785. Roscoe has been growing rapidly, because of this, it has been engaged in a number of border disputes with Rockton. Some of its recent developments include the Hidden Creek custom home subdivisions and Promontory Ridge.

Among its biggest tourist attractions is the Historic Auto Museum. Though its name might not be that attractive, the scope and type of cultural artifacts that it houses far outweighs this. For instance, you can see one of Hitler's staff cars just next to a uniform worn by TV's Hogan's Heroes star, Colonel Klink. Also, a section of the fence that was near the site of JFK's assassination is displayed. Its curator, Wayne Lensing is to thank for the items displayed in the museum. He has made sure that any item of cultural or historical significance that he can lay his hands on is displayed at this museum. For instance, among the items that he bought and are on display right now is the gun that was used to kill John Dillinger. Also, Richard Nixon's limousine is among the items displayed here.

It is from this museum that you can get to see for yourself the thickness of Joseph Stalin's limousine bulletproof glass. In fact, it is 2-inch thicker when compared to that of Evita Peron's limo. You can get to see these limousines and those of other 20th century leaders and dictators in a gallery that is named "World Leaders" in this museum.

What is special about this museum is that it gives equal importance to some items that would have been ignored by other museums. For instance, the veil that Jackie Kennedy wore to JFK's funeral and the chicken-yellow V-12 Lincoln of Colonel Sanders are displayed. A pickup truck used on Sanford and Son is displayed a few feet from the mantelpiece on which the authorization to drop the atom bomb on Hiroshima was signed by President Truman.

There are many more artifacts in this museum that make it the biggest attraction in Roscoe IL. Many of these artifacts are from the Kennedy era. For instance, you can see JFK's golf balls, Caroline Kennedy's yellow Easter suit, and a closet full of Jacky Kennedy's dresses. Also, you can see Lee Harvey Oswald's actual catalog that he used to order his gun and the ambulance that was used to take him to hospital after Jack Ruby shot him. Some items that are stained with the blood of JFK are also on display. Though the museum does not display the actual limo that JFK was in when he was shot, he displays the real car that was following JFK's.

Other attractions that you should make time and visit in Roscoe IL include Stone Bridge Trail, Firehouse Pub, Poison Ivy Pub, Jackpot Joe's LLC, and The Bargain Barn. Some notable people who call Roscoe home include Minnesota state senator, John Q. Briggs, Danica Patrick who is the only woman to win the IndyCar Series, and Nicole Manske who is the co-host of the Speed Report and also a sports reporter.
