Genoa IL is a city found in the north-east area of DeKalb County in the state of Illinois. Based on the 2010 census, the city has 5,193 people. It is a city that residents say feels like home. Early History Of Genoa IL

This city is located on the Galena-Chicago stagecoach route. It was settled in 1835 by, Thomas Madison, the first storekeeper in the city. He was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War, originally from Ashtabula County in Ohio. He named the city Genoa after a town of the same name in New York

The first industries to thrive in Genoa IL were a distillery and sawmill. In its early years it also flourished as an agricultural community.

Governance 

Genoa IL officially became a city on September 9, 1911. With regard to governance, the city is governed by a mayor and the City Council composed of 8 members. This city is divided into 4 wards. Two aldermen represent each ward. The aldermen and the mayor serve 4-year terms. City terms have arranged it in such a way that one alderman from every ward is elected every 2 years.

Parks and Preserves in Genoa IL

Genoa has many tourist attractions to boast of. It is a city noted for its beautiful parks. Chamberlain Park is a beautiful 15 acres of expanse. It is a great place to have a picnic and ideal for families with children. They have a skate park, playground, tennis courts, soccer field and an aquatic center.

Kierman Park is a newer haunt. It is a 43 acre space with several picnic locations, 8 soccer fields, a playground and a trail for those who want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the woods.

Tourists that want to enjoy the great outdoors will love Russell Woods Forest Preserve. This has trails and a camp ground. They have fishing and canoeing areas for those who seek bonding time with Mother Nature. Their Nature Center is in the preserve as well and offers a wide variety of classes and discussions for interested guests.

Museum

The Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Museum is Genoa's pride and joy. It is the ideal place to go to for those who want to immerse themselves in Genoa's history. 

The Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society was formed in 1977. The goal was to bring together people who were interested in the local and regional history. These individuals were responsible for moving the Milkwaukee Road Depot from North Sycamore Street to where it stands today, Park Avenue.

This quaint building was standing when railroads were the center of activity in the city. It now serves as a depository of Genoa's rich history and a museum for curious locals and tourists. It houses various photos and artifacts that show people how different life was in the olden days and the evolution of the city to what it is today. 

Wineries

Prairie State Winery is another one of Genoa's best tourist spots. Rick and Maria Mamoser wanted to forgo the long commute and live in the suburbs. They opened Prairie State mercantile in July 1998. They sold goods and great wine, hoping to keep things local. This won them numerous awards for the exciting concept. 

Prairie State Winery opened in the fall of 1999. They produced wines only using Illinois grapes. Thanks to their science background, home wine making experience, and a national wine curriculum immersion, they began to win awards for their product. From the first vintage at just 500 gallons, they are now producing vintages of about 13,000 gallons.
